I have often wondered what the original surface of the North Wessex Way might have been. Was it just a grass track or was there some sort of hard surface used in the past? Most of the route has now been covered with modern road material, especially at either end of the road, with the A roads and B roads. The best chance of finding an original road surface would be in the Braydon Forest, where the route has been much less developed in recent times. And so a chance conversation with a landowner in the Braydon Forest led to a gathering of keen amateur archaeologists to see whether we could find something below the surface. This is the story of that dig!
